Il y a — "there is / there are"

Il y a is a fixed expression that never changes form, no matter what follows it — it works for both singular and plural.
- Il y a une cuisine. — There is a kitchen.
- Il y a deux chambres. — There are two bedrooms.
- Il y a un jardin derrière la maison. — There is a garden behind the house.
- Il y a des livres sur la table. — There are some books on the table.
To make it negative, wrap it around "il y a": "Il n'y a pas de jardin." (There is no garden.) Note that after a negation, "un/une/des" usually becomes "de".
To ask a question: "Est-ce qu'il y a une salle de bain ?" (Is there a bathroom?)
